"McVICKER and STUDENTS: Plein Air Paintings"

"The Zen of Painting: 100 Brushstrokes”
with Linda Mitchell
"100 Brushstrokes" is an exercise Linda Mitchell has developed to help painting students become more conscious of the process of painting and more aware of the quality of their personal expression. Each week Linda will set up a still life for students to paint with only 100 strokes, a task more challenging that it sounds. Expressive brushwork, interpretive color choices, and personal mark-making are emphasized. Beginners and experienced painters are welcome.

"Plein Air Boot Camp”
with Stock Schlueter
Join Stock and learn all the ins and outs of painting the landscape directly from nature! Stock is offering a weekend designed to take students from the basics of painting outdoors to finished plein air paintings. Stock will talk about plein air materials, gear, and logistics, and he'll demonstrate efficient strategies for coping with changing light and weather conditions. The first day will begin at Eureka Studio Arts and will include a demo and discussion about plein air painting, before heading outside to paint on location; on the second day, students will receive six hours of instruction and painting time. Both days will end with a short critique and discussion of the painting process. Students may take one or both days.

"Moving Tao: Cultivating your Creativity"
with Pearl Huang and Ellen LeBel

Ever wonder how to get out of feeling artistically stuck, uninspired or bored? Join Pearl Huang and Ellen LeBel in a workshop designed to reconnect body, mind and spirit and rejuvenate your artistic practice with Tai Ji Qi Gong, Chinese calligraphy and play. Experience and learn how traditional Asian artists focus their energy physically, mentally and spiritually through movement and awareness. This workshop is designed for all artists and no prior experience with Tai Ji or Chinese brush calligraphy is needed. Materials are included. Please bring your own sketchbook and pen or pencils and wear comfortable clothes and shoes. 
Date and time: Sunday, November 2 from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (with a one-hour lunch break)

"The Art and Science of Drawing"
Drawing is part scientific exploration and part creative act. This workshop clearly defines the rules behind representational drawing but also explores the opportunities for expression within them. Brent puts the myth of talent to rest by demystifying the thought processes behind good drawing while encouraging each student to experiment within those rules. Students are challenged to explore any blocks they might have that keep them from producing successful drawings and taught new methods of thinking about the drawing process.
October 2 - November 6 / Thursdays from 2-4 p.m.

"Beginning Figure Drawing"
This ONGOING CLASS meets each Monday to draw from the live model. Brent focuses on the fundamental techniques and ideas behind figure drawing, including gesture, the basic structures of the body, contours and lighting. He has taken his study of numerous methods of figure draing and combinded them with his own ideas and experiences to create a unique approach. Students are encouraged to keep one foot in the tried and true traditions while they experiment to find their own modus operandi.
DATE/TIME: ONGOING Mondays 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.

"Mastering the Fundamentals of Figure Drawing and an Introduction to the Human Anatomy for the Artist"
This ONGOING CLASS takes a deeper look into the essential skeletal and muscular systems of the body from a drawing perspective.   Each week a new muscle or bone group will be studied through demonstration drawings, examinations of a live model and time for students to draw.  Students will gain a wider  understanding of the human body in figure drawing which can be applied immediately to their own drawings as well as give them a foundation for further anatomical study.
Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9-noon.

"DIRECT PAINTING"with Rachel K Schlueter
Rachel will begin teaching an ONGOING CLASS beginning January 9, 2014! This is a great opportunity for serious study with one of the North Coast's finest expressionist painters. STUDENTS ARE WELCOME TO USE OILS OR ACRYLICS. All skill levels are welcome.

This ongoing class focuses on the key principles that every artist needs to know in order to improve their work. The topics addressed include fundamentals of drawing and painting, understanding value, color, edges, and how to create a good design. Students work from their own photos or still life objects and individual goals and needs are addressed on a one-on-one basis.

This ongoing class resumes September 24 and will meet Wednesday evenings from 5:30 - 8:30. Each week, Linda will set up a still life  designed to help students learn the fundamental skills of painting from life. The creative voices and personal goals of individual students are fostered and developed.

with Jim McVicker
Don't miss this rare opportunity to spend two full days painting with one of the north coast's most beloved and accomplished painters. Jim will begin his workshop at ESA on Saturday morning by talking about his process and giving a painting demo. In the afternoon, students will paint outdoors at a location in Eureka. On Sunday, students will meet in Trinidad for a full day of plein air painting. Jim will help each artist understand how to see values, warm and cool color and light. He'll give individual instruction and guidance to each student as their paintings progress. Enrollment is limited and we expect this class to fill up, so email us to be put on a waiting list.

Exploring Mixed Media"with Rachel K. Schlueter
Rachel has designed this ongoing class with experimentation and creativity in mind. Join her each week for three hours of exploring innovative ways of using a variety of materials, including paints, mediums, drawing implements, stencils, found objects, magazine clippings, etc. Exercises will be provided each week to get your creative juices flowing, and Rachel will even supply the materials!

on December 7 was a big success!
Everyone loved DUANE FLATMO'S 
Duane worked through the entire event and created eight 
small airbrush paintings. At the end of the night, we had
a drawing and gave the paintings away to some very happy
winners. A big thank you to Duane and everyone who came out
to support us!
